Storytelling Project

Making Masks with Bedlinog Primary

On Tuesday 4th March, we delivered our Mask Masking workshop to Bedlinog Primary school pupils. The aim of the workshop was to encourage pupils to be as imaginative as possible whilst they created masks that would transform them into whoever they desired to be.

As you can see from the photographs above, the masks that were created were fantastic, and so imaginative! We thoroughly enjoyed delivering the workshop.

Bedlinog Primary School Try Storytelling!

On 25th February, the Steam Powered Stories team headed to Bedlinog Primary School's After School club to deliver our Storytelling Project!

The primary school children, aged 3-10, worked in pairs to create half a story, and half a monster.

Whilst one pupil wrote the beginning and half of the middle story, the other pupil then wrote the rest of the middle and the end of the story, not seeing what the other pupil wrote. The result was a story that was unique, crafted through team work, and very interesting to read.

Here are the stories and the children's illustrations!

1) The Ballet monster in the attic
Once upon a time there was a little girl and another little girl too. They had a problem, they had a monster in their house! They didn’t want him to get out of the house or people would hurt him. The little girls hid him in their room as mam shouted it is dinner time.
There were 5 ballet dancers and they were all girls and they all loved ballet. One day there was a monster who really loved ballet too, he wanted to join in with the girls but they were too afraid to say hello so the monster tried again and again and again but they still ran away from him. But one day the ballet dancer said hello and they all said hello and danced together.
2) The Swag Monster
He was a small alien, he saw a man with swag and he copied him. He went to school and was called weird.
Swag Monster went home after hanging with his dude monsters at the swag park, where they were rapping and yo-yoing to the swagettes. Mam monster wasn’t happy with swag monster and told him to pull his trousers up and go to his sludge room and tidy his slop bath and go to bed.

3) The Sports Monster
It was a damp wet day. There was thunder and lightning, everybody arrived at the church and through the glass and the people could see the sports monster and he had powers shooting balls at someone and the ball would come straight back and always knock the monster out.
Bossley the sports monster was great at sports but got bullied saying he cheated because he was the best. He was hanging out with his friends, His mother came and said stop playing sports I don’t like you getting bullied so stop. Now go home but he snuck out again and got captured.

We thoroughly enjoyed the workshop, and aimed to prove to pupils that storytelling can be fun! Pupils involved were fascinated by the process of creating a story with their friends, and drawing their monsters that infused their imaginations!

Our first workshop!

Welcome to our Storytelling Project page!

Our Storytelling Project is a separate project from the What you say COUNTS! scheme, it aims to develop literary skills in younger children by telling them stories

The project is a free programme for primary schools in the area, and is funded by GwirVol. Gwirvol, based in Wales, are led by the views of young people to ultimately increase the number of volunteering opportunities for young people in Wales.

With the funding provided, we will attend after school clubs and deliver exciting, and innovative workshops that aim to encourage children to enjoy reading.

We have already booked sessions across Wales, creating a strong support network. We are also in the process of developing a system for older children to prove that reading is accessible, and has the potential to be fun and educational for all.

If you would like us to come to an after school club close to you, or just simply want more information about the scheme, feel free to contact us on the details below-
